    A black sticky substance derived from coal tar. It is sprayed into casks and barrels as a protective layer against moisture and infections.

    1. To spray the inside walls of a cask or barrel with a pitch to protect the beer from infection. 2. To pitch with yeast, which is the action of adding yeast to the cooled wort.
